Self-Sustainability

May 15, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

My backyard hydroponic garden...and chickens...

I’ve written quite a bit over the years on the topic of sustainability. Much of my writing has concerned environmental sustainability and managing impacts in order to avoid ecological harm to the planet.

Here I want to twist that topic around a bit and point it back at ourselves…

with the idea of avoiding self-harm.

How can we live lives that help us to be more self sustainable and less reliant on others…

such as the phone company, electric company, bread, milk and cheese companies and other mass manufacturers of the shit we consume into our bodies on a regular basis?

Having more control over one’s life is a good thing.

I know that to be especially true in business. The more I can control, or at least exert a high degree of influence over, the better I can predict what will happen next and that’s always a good thing in any economic undertaking.

And I believe that principle also applies to the business of life.

In our quest for convenience and luxury I’m afraid we’ve ceded far too much control to corporations who are more concerned with “shareholder return” than “customer well-being.”

good healthy home-grown food...

Examples can be found lurking right inside your fridge. Food that’s mass produced is full of stuff we don’t know is there…

and if we did (and the long-term effect it can have) we probably wouldn’t dare eat it.

So why not produce our own food?

Some time ago I got into organic gardening. The reason I did so is exactly in line with the topic of this post. To be more self-sustainable and less reliant on some profit motivated corporation to make sure I’m properly nourished.

Oh sure those huge carrots and strawberries in the produce section of Walmart look healthy, but they’re not. They’re grown in food factories that inject all manner of chemicals and pesticides to make growing them as efficient and profitable as possible.

And if you’ve ever tasted a piece of produce not so injected, you’d know that that Walmart stuff actually tastes like crap.

Mass production of food might be good for the profit and loss statement’s bottom line, but it ain’t so good for your personal bottom line….the one upon which your ass is squarely placed.

So I tried to learn how to grow my own food, first with organic gardening.

Organic gardening is great as long as (1) you have a place to do it, (2) time to do it and (3) you don’t plan to move any time soon (organic gardens are not very portable).

But because I really had none of the above conditions met very well, I migrated to another form of self-production of healthy food…

hydroponic gardening.

my tomatoes will be here soon...

When I first starting researching it I came across all these complicated systems of doing hydroponic gardening that were expensive and seemed to require an engineering degree from MIT to implement.

That is until I moved to Perez Zeledon and stumbled into my now good-friend, David Picado.

David, who’s sort of a tico whiz kid, took a course offered by INA (which is the Costa Rican free education system for ticos to learn all sort of trades and skills) in hydroponic gardening and then started his own little business constructing and installing personal hydroponic green houses.

I came across his advertising one day (painted on a large rock near my house) and decided to give him a call.

David Picado (aka "chino") installing hydroponic garden in my backyard in Perez Zeledon...

He installed a very simple and rudimentary greenhouse and hydroponic system in my back yard and I’ve had it there for a couple years now.

They require very little space and can be moved relatively easily.

In fact the concept of hydroponic gardening the Picado way could be installed in a space as small as a 50th floor balcony overlooking Central Park.

You can do it virtually anywhere. And the cool thing is that the plants grow incredibly fast and delicious. So fast that you can be eating lettuce from your garden in about a month.

All it takes is a little sustaining substance for the plant roots (I use carbon chips), sunlight and the proper amount of liquid nutrient that you administer to the roots daily.

That last part is a bit complicated for this post, but the information is no big secret…

just google it!

Self-sustainability, via hydroponic (or organic) gardening is cool as hell and if the world caught on, it could mean more health, less hunger and less greed.

That to me is a very good thing.

The Elite Forces of No

May 13, 2014 by costaricaguy 1 Comment

the elite forces of no

I’m a big Seth Godin fan…

I’ve been one for years…even before it was cool.

I haven’t run across too many of Godin’s pithy prognostications that I didn’t wholeheartedly believe in…

until today.

Seth posted…and I quote…

No is essential

If you believe that you must keep your promises, over-deliver and treat every commitment as though it’s an opportunity for a transformation, the only way you can do this is to turn down most opportunities.

No I can’t meet with you, no I can’t sell it to you at this price, no I can’t do this job justice, no I can’t come to your party, no I can’t help you. I’m sorry, but no, I can’t. Not if I want to do the very things that people value my work for.

No is the foundation that we can build our yes on.

from Seth’s blog
May 13, 2014

I’m also a fan of Mr. Jonathan Shields. His Good Life Project is often inspirational for me.

Jonathan apparently agreed with Seth as he tweeted out the above post this morning.

Well, that didn’t surprise me at all.

You see, I have been on the other end of a couple of Field’s noes (or is it no’s?)

I was looking for endorsements to an eBook I wrote and sent a copy over to JF.

No response…which I took as a NO.

Oh sure, he might’ve hated it…how would I know as I never received any response at all (again, Jonathan is very adept at taking Seth’s advice).

I also learned recently that Jonathan was in Costa Rica. So, being the Costa Rica Guy that I am, I offered my considerable expertise (hey, it’s the one thing I can legitimately claim expertise about).

While he did politely respond…

he declined the offer as he already had it all covered.

Now, I don’t blame or resent either of those no’s.

He’s a busy guy and I am a NO-body…

But I will use them to make this morning’s post point…

And that is, that Mr. Godin needn’t worry…

the elite forces of no are alive and well.

Why do I say “elite” forces?

Because folks like Seth and Jonathan, as well as many others whom I admire, tend to reserve their yes’s for those on their level or above…

It’s a bit uncommon for a yes to flow downward…

And that’s not a rare phenomenon in our world…

Consider that…

  • banks tend to say yes only to those who don’t really need their money…
  • employers tend to say yes to those in least need of a job…
  • universities tend to say yes to those in least need of an education…
  • venture capitalists tend to say yes to those in least need of capital…
  • hot chicks tend to say yes to those in least need of a date…

I could go on.

We love to say yes to those most like us, or to those whom we most aspire.

Why is that?

Does that make the world a better place?

I don’t think so.

So, as much as I usually like to agree with Seth and Jonathan…

here’s one case where I get to say NO.

I was busy yesterday with something when I heard someone outside the house yelling for me. I sighed and went downstairs to see who was invading my space…

it was a young guy who comes by from time to time and washes my car…

I believe he has or has had a drug problem.

Anyway, he asked me for money to take the bus back to San Jose…said he had been living on the street and just wanted to go home to his mom…

My first reaction was to take Seth’s advice. After all, this kid is certainly NOT my responsibility.

But then I remembered what this blog is about…what I want my life to be about…

impact.

So I said yes. I had to actually leave my house and drive to a cash machine to deliver on it.

It was inconvenient.

It might have been fruitless.

But it felt like the right thing to do.

My point this morning is this…

Impact mindfulness might mean letting your yes’s flow downward and your no’s upward for a change.

Sorry Seth…

and Jonathan.

The culture of no that your propagating might be more convenient for you…

but it’s just not impact mindful.

Happiness is a Universal Desire

May 9, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

happiness is a universal desire

There’s a lot separating us as humans…

like…

borders…
language…
race…
culture…
religion…
politics…
economic status…
anger…
envy…
jealousy…
fear…

and a whole lotta other fucked-up shit (pardon my french).

But one thing we have in common is…

the desire to be HAPPY!

And that has recently been melodically represented in Pharrell’s new super-hit by the same name…

Happy

Yesterday I woke up feeling a little blue. Oh yea, I got lots of reasons to feel that way, or at least I can conjure up a few if I strain that muscle hard enough.

But then I stumbled upon an Oprah clip where she’s interviewing Pharrell. They are discussing the phenomenon that has taken place with respect to this song.

That is folks all over the world, getting really friggin happy and making videos of it.

And these videos have become perhaps even more popular than the song itself.

Pharrell’s song has been co-opted by the universe.

Imagine that!

Oprah played a video for Pharrell that was an amalgamation of these happy videos from around the globe…

and Pharrell just broke down, right on the set.

How embarrassing!

No, not really…it was a beautiful moment. The dude created something that has resonated to the far ends of the globe and it was just too much to take in.

That’s what I call…IMPACT!

And why would Pharrell’s tune have had such a reaction?

Because it helps people experience an emotion that we all desire…

happiness!

And not just happiness…but connection too!

I know I felt connected to the crazies in those videos…and it made me happy.

Who doesn’t want to be happy?

Putin perhaps?

The Taliban?

I bet secretly even they couldn’t help but get their groves on a little if ever exposed to Pharrell’s little dose of happiness.

So, I played the song repeatedly throughout the day and man did I ever get happy.

In fact, Pharrell has even created a web site with a 24 hour video of people getting happy.

In this day and age, when you turn on the news and see anything but happiness, what a refreshment this not-so-young-anymore dude has offered to the world.

Gracias Mr. Pharrell…thanks for reminding us that happiness is a universal desire…

oh, and I love your cool hats.

So…

Clap along if you feel that happiness is the truth!

Because it is.

Deep down, we all know that.

One of my favorite Happy videos…this one from Slovokia.

The Body Mind Connection

May 7, 2014 by costaricaguy 2 Comments

the body mind connection

You can’t change the world if you feel like shit…

from sticky note on CRG’s bathroom mirror

Impact mindfulness is about changing the world…

I mean that’s the objective, right?

I listened to an interesting Unmistakable Creative podcast episode this morning. Srini was interviewing Meg Worden. Now, you probably don’t know this, but Meg spent 2 years in Federal prison for dealing ecstasy…that’s an “awful” drug that’s possibly the best cure for PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). But, even so, taking it and certainly selling it, can still get you in a whole lot of trouble…as Meg found out.

Meg talks a lot about the connection between the body and the mind. Meg called it the “mind-body” connection, but I like to think of the concept more in terms of the body mind connection.

That is, how what we do to and with our bodies affects our mind…the core of our creative capacity.

In the interview, she made the point that this connection is especially important when it comes to creative types…those crazies who want to create something that is going to have an impact on the world…

or, folks like…me!

Problem is, I’m  often NOT cognizant of it.

Or, willfully inattentive, perhaps?

It’s part and parcel of my rebellious nature, I think.

I have written in the past about how self-indulgence is my creativity kryptonite.

That’s sort of exactly what Meg’s getting at.

To be mindful of what it is you’re consuming into your body…physically and mentally…

garbage in…garbage out…so to speak.

Her message resonated with me because from my own experience I can attest and say right on Meg!

Even though I don’t always take her extremely wise advice.

I am considering a new book (on the heels of my soon to be published Revolutionary Misfit Manifesto) about Practical Impacts…

That is, practical ways to put impact mindfulness into practice in your actual day-to-day lives.

Most of what we talk about here are remote impacts…that is, how we can put these concepts into practice to make life better for others…for people and planet…

but how about for ourselves?

If what we are doing is self-destruction, maybe in subtle ways, but destructive nonetheless, then our ability to have an impact will probably fizzle and flop…

in other words, as the opening quote suggests…

it’s extremely hard to change the world when you feel like shit.

So, my point this morning is about a practice of impact mindfulness that starts with ourselves…

that is, being mindful about how we treat our own bodies…

and minds.

I don’t always do so well in that regard.

How about you?

Are you mindful about what you eat, drink, listen to, look at, take in, ingest, digest, soak up and consume?

It’s really important to the overall concept of impact mindfulness because the ability to be a change agent starts right here…

with me.

And I’m the one with 100% control here.

So, really there are no excuses in this case.

Because if I’m less than a whole, integrated and healthy human…I am a far less effective change agent.

So, what you put in your mouth and ultimately what slides down into the stomach and gradually filters through the blood stream and becomes a part of you…

does matter.

As does what enters the portal of consciousness called the eyes and filters its way into that muscle of creative capacity called the brain.

Be more careful…and mindful about those things…

and ultimately become a more impact-full human being.

Let’s do this together, hold each other accountable…

I need that!

OK?

Letting Go – Redux

May 1, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

Letting Go - Redux

Here’s a post from the past that might be relevant to something going on in your life (or mine).

Letting go…

I have the hardest time doing that.

I would rather ride my problems into submission like a bronco-buster on the back of a wild mustang.

Sometimes that approach can leave you with a few broken bones, or an extremely bruised ego.

Hanging on for dear life is the surest way to assure that the suffering will last just a little longer than it really needs to.

So why not just let go?

The future might just be a brighter place if you do. Oh sure, there will be more, but different, problems to come.

That’s just the ebb and flow of life…

one day you’re up, the next day you’re down…

sounds a bit manic, but it is what it is.

Life is anything but permanent…

so get used to it!

Of course letting go can be a scary thing.

What will happen to me if I do?

Where will the shifting winds of life blow me?

Will I like it there?

Well, do you like it here?

Then why not give it a try?

I guess life becomes a cyclical series of attempts to hang on to the good and let go of the bad.

Problem comes when we can’t seem to distinguish one from the other (good from bad, that is).

That’s been my case at many points throughout my five decades of earthbound existence.

Often trying valiantly to convince myself that what was bad and unhealthy, was good and worth hanging onto.

Better to make the decision to just let go…

Para bien o para mal, se terminó, as Arjona sings.

Letting go allows the cycle of life to continue its proper course.

When we try to upset that course by hanging on too long, guess what happens…

depression.

Extend that a bit longer…

disillusion.

And just a bit longer…

insane asylum.

And I really don’t want to go to any of those places.

Oh for sure, there will be that lingering doubt that keeps nagging.

Are you sure?

Or, that sentimental hogwash that keeps reminding us of all the “good” times.

But the reality of the situation is that those times are history (as in, NO MORE) and living in the past does not generally make for a compelling future.

Letting go can be refreshing if we can just adopt a bit of an adventurous spirit.

What lies around the corner might just be pretty nice. Maybe ever better than what you’re so desperately holding onto.

Imagine that!

Could the universe be preparing something really good for you and it was just waiting for you to take the bold step forward into the dark void of the unknown?

Here’s my advice: Go ahead, take it and don’t look back.

Looking for some great advice on actually doing that?

Leo Babauta, one of my all-time favorite righteous bloggers, out of his abundant generosity, today (his birthday by the way) offered up this free little eBook, about…

wouldn’t you know it…

Letting Go

But don’t just read it…

do it.

From Storms to Sterling

April 30, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

from storms to Sterling

The small us is alive and well…

and wreaking havoc upon people and planet.

The proof?

Well, who can only but notice the change in the weather.

Yea, sure there have been storms forever…

but like this?

OK, I’ll admit there’s no hard evidence that global warming is causing an increase in the frequency of these massive F-4 and F-5 killer tornadoes…

but what if it is?

There’s certainly compelling evidence that it’s causing other anomalies, like floods, droughts and hurricanes.

And what does that have to do with the small us…you ask?

Well, I believe small us thinking, primarily by big oil and auto, among others, or those that benefit economically from the continued insatiable consumption of fossil fuels, leads the way in making sure that a country bearing a disproportionate share of the earth’s CO2 emissions…

does little to nothing about it…

rather than lead the world in clean fuel technology…

as it should!

And they have the likes of Fox News to help perpetuate this dangerous nonsense.

Don’t believe it? Check this out!

The point of this post is not about weather, but the general craziness that’s going on out there.

Consider the following recent headlines…

  • Owner of the L.A. Clippers, Donald Sterling, banned from the NBA for life after being caught on tape making racists remarks, basically admonishing his mixed-race mistress not to associate publicly with black people after she posed for a picture with Magic Johnson…
  • Former Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin telling an NRA audience that “water-boarding is how we baptize terrorists” AND getting roundly applauded for the absurdly anti-Christian remark…
  • An Egyptian court issues 683 death sentences in one fell swoop against members of the Muslim Brotherhood…
  • Man is arrested after throwing a banana at Barcelona’s Dani Alves during a soccer match…

Alves picked it up and took a bite before making his corner kick…

Score one big goal for Dani Alves!

Now, what do all these incidents seem to have in common?

small us thinking!

Because small us thinking always pits one group against another…

  • conservatives against liberals
  • Christians against Muslims
  • global warming advocates against global warming deniers
  • whites against blacks
  • blacks against whites
  • men against women
  • people against nature
  • capitalists against socialists
  • collectivists against individualists
  • nation against nation
  • tribe against tribe
  • people against people

It’s really kind of sad.

In the words of one of the poster-victims of the small us…

the late Rodney King…

Can’t we all just get along?

Sorry, Rodney, but it just doesn’t seem so.

I know I sound like the proverbial broken record, but, really, the answer is, in my opinion, the realization that we indeed are all…

in this planetary boat together.

From storms to Sterling, these small us views do threaten us all.

Isn’t it high time to get rid of them…for good?

To adopt a mindset that there really are no enemies…

except the mentality of the small us.

We’re all made of the same flesh and blood.

We all have the same basic needs…

and desires.

To be happy, live with dignity, free from oppression and exploitation…and small us generated hatred.

In the words of the one who probably wouldn’t agree with Palin’s remarks…

love your enemies…

Because by doing that, they might indeed stop hating you…

and killing you.

Terrorism just might cease to exist.

Now, I’m not quite so naive as to really believe that we don’t have enemies…

but I do believe that thinking of them only in that way just makes things worse.

Because the truth is that they’re not solely our enemies…

they’re people too…

just like us in more ways than you might be imagining.

The truth is that small us thinking will never solve the problems in our world…because it’s most often the source of them!
