Straining Gnats and Swallowing Camels

January 13, 2015 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

On Straining Gnats and Swallowing Camels

I’ll admit “the news” can be pretty addicting.

But it pays to remember what the underlying objective of nonstop “news”, by the likes of CNN, Fox and others, is…

making money.

Don’t get fooled into believing otherwise.

Yesterday, I got involved in a Facebook comment string on a post about how Obama was criticized, especially by Fox News, for failing to attend a rally in Paris in solidarity against the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack.

My take on the matter was…WTF cares!

And really, I could say that about a lot of things that masquerade as news these days.

I especially like to pick on Fox.

Why?

Because they don’t even put up much of an effort towards being a legitimate news channel.

It’s very hard for me to take Fox News serious…and the same goes for the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze.

Just take a look at the websites of Limbaugh and Beck.

What seems to be the objective there…to enlighten their readers with good and useful information, or simply to make Beck and Limbaugh more money?

Both sites are massive eyesores…

Littered with ads trying to sell everything from guns and ammo to identity theft protection.

Don’t Rush and Glenn already have enough fucking money not to have to distract their readers with relentless ads about stuff no one really needs.

No, of course not…there’s never enough, right?

You see, it’s not about the message…it’s about the money.

I believe all these guys, and especially Fox news, foment our worst fears and prejudices because they know that’s what drives ratings.

And those ratings make the paychecks of O’Reilly and Hannity larger, and ultimately inflate the wealth of the Newscorp billionaire owner, Rupert Murdoch.

That, IMHO, is the real purpose behind the existence of Fox News, as well as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck…

And in pursuit of that purpose, they do major harm to people and planet.

How?

Well, a particular case in point is the extent to which they add to the absolute ignorance that is global warming denial.

And as their massive audiences fall prey to this insanity, the more certain Congressman are emboldened to remain in the pockets of big oil and block any legislative attempt to do something to solve a very serious problem…

Same goes with spiraling wealth inequality, racial strife and other divisive issues of our day.

People and the planet we live on are thus threatened by all this nonsense in the name of “news” dissemination profiteering.

This is serious stuff folks.

If Rush or Beck really wanted to get their messages across, perhaps they could take the lead of one of my favorite bloggers…

Leo Babauta of zenhabits.net.

Check out his site. See any adds? See anything at all other than the bare message that he’s presenting to his reading audience.

It’s not that Leo doesn’t need to make a living…hell, he’s got a wife and 6 kids!

But to Leo, what’s more important is improving the quality of life of his readers…making the world a better place…not making money.

And he does just fine with the quarter of a million or so who regularly view his blog.

The Fox News, Beck and Limbaugh approach to “news” presentation reminds me of what Jesus once said about the Pharisees of his day, who he viewed as a threat to the people of Israel…they’re all about (and I paraphrase)…

Straining gnats and swallowing camels.

In other words, they don’t have their attention on, and they’re certainly not trying to direct our attention to, what’s most important.

They have the power at their disposal to make things better, to be impact mindful…

But do they use it that way?

No, instead they try to peddle us garbage and feed on our worst fears, just so they can make an extra million or two.

I’m here to tell you that further increases to their already massive net worths is NOT what’s most important.

They certainly don’t deserve nearly the amount of attention that people give them.

Sustainability is a Spiritual Concept

September 23, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

climate change march photo

I believe the essence of spirituality is the search for truth, about ourselves and our world.

Lately I’ve been interested in the atheistic viewpoint, reading the likes of Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krause.

I’m not an atheist. But I don’t believe there’s anything inherently wrong with atheism. It’s just another way of trying to figure things out.

In other words, atheists are just as spiritual as the rest of us seekers.

On the other hand, religious people, or those who have accepted the dogma of a particular religion as representing undeniable truth, are unspiritual.

That’s because in my mind, as soon as you stop searching, you lose spirituality.

On Sunday of this week, people around the world, with some 400,000 in New York city alone, marched in support of action to prevent the catastrophes threatened by global warming and resulting climate change.

There is overwhelming science behind the idea that the burning of fossil fuels is the culprit behind the phenomenon of global warming. And climate change is something we are actually experiencing now at an accelerated rate.

Yet, there are many who scoff at those who would take action to sustain our planet. In the U.S., the loudest of the scoffers is the Fox News Channel.

I watched a video this morning of the Fox News Five deriding the participants of the march in New York with their typical terminology, calling the marchers hypocrites, hippies and communists.

What exactly is the underlying motive behind the cynical attitude of Fox News towards people who have a passion for sustainability?

Because in my mind sustainability and spirituality go hand in hand.

I believe it’s because Fox News has positioned itself as the guardian of the status quo. And many are saying, now more loudly than ever, that in order for us to combat global warming, the status quo must change.

Change to what?

Something better. Something more sustainable.

And that scares the hell out of a lot of people, especially the ones that regularly tune into Fox. And of course, that’s what keeps the Fox News ratings high and Rupert Murdoch, one very happy billionaire.

The only reason to be afraid of change is if you are convinced that the status quo represents the truth, or the way things are supposed to be. And in America many believe that’s exactly the case.

Our capitalistic system is sacred to many. It’s as if they believe it to be god-ordained. But unfortunately it’s the engine behind the activity that’s overheating our planet.

Being convinced that something is true doesn’t necessarily make it so, unless, of course, your conviction is backed by scientific fact.

Moreover, the mode of thinking being perpetuated by Fox News, that the status quo is somehow sacred, is what really threatens us all.

And, despite the fact that most of the Fox viewers would probably identify themselves as christian, this Fox News motivated mode of thinking is inherently unspiritual.

I wrote the following piece many years ago on the connection that I see between sustainability and spirituality.

I believe it’s now more relevant than ever, so I decided to re-post it this morning. Because in my opinion those so-called hypocrites, hippies and communists who marched on Sunday are actually the most spiritual among us. They are the ones searching for truth. And they are the ones who can help save us, despite the contrary efforts of Fox News.

…

My last post addressed my personal definition of what it means to act sustainable. However, what is the ultimate aim of sustainable action? I believe only in knowing that can one truly bend the bow, release that arrow of ardent action, and hit the intended target.

It seems we’ve been far too focused for a very long time on maintaining inanimate objects, or stuff, than we’ve been on sustaining life.

If you’re a spiritual person with a belief that life is beautiful, regardless of your conception of how it might have come to be in the first place, you probably also hold fast to a conviction that we should try to sustain life in its healthy and beautiful state.

But human interaction and impact, with its priority on the inanimate stuff that gives us that false sense of comfort, has tended to diminish that healthy state.

Sustainability thus becomes our attempt at managing our interactions and impacts in a way that promotes the health of living things…

a healthy environment with healthy ecosystems, our own healthy bodies, even healthy relationships.

I guess we could call this facilitating ecological health, or endurance.

Of course, if you’re not at all spiritual and would rather subscribe to a “survival of the fittest” philosophy of life, then you probably don’t feel much of a need to act sustainable.

That’s the status quo way of thinking…that seeks to sustain not the health of living things, but the pursuit of selfish interests, with continued priority on the inanimate stuff that satisfies our lust for material comfort.

Sustainability, on the other hand, is a spiritual recognition that life is connected and that every part has a role to play in sustaining the whole.

It’s not sustainable to just sit back and expect for living things to sustain themselves and if they fall short, well it was just meant to be.

That all that really matters is my own personal comfort and the fact that people are starving, animals are becoming extinct, rain forests are disappearing, and the planet is overheating, just doesn’t enter into my picture.

Because the reality of connection is that, oh yes it will, eventually!

Sustainability is a spiritual concept that’s concerned that our interactions and impacts facilitate the health and endurance of the life that surrounds us, and of which we’re an integral part.

And I truly believe that in so doing the spiritual health of the human race can also be dramatically improved.

The Curious Case of Bowe Bergdahl

June 6, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

the curious case of Bowe Bergdahl

America loves its POWs, right?

Well, maybe. Depends.

Here we have the curious case of Bowe Bergdahl.

From June 30, 2009, when Bowe, an American soldier, was captured by the Taliban, until May 31, 2014, when he was released, Bergdahl was a prisoner of war.

Those facts are not in dispute.

What is in dispute are the facts surrounding his capture.

But we have yet to actually hear a single word from Bowe himself.

Even so, the far right is completely ready to have him tried for treason…in the media.

The target of their ire is not so much Bergdahl, but Obama. Who released five members of the Taliban held at Gitmo in exchange for Bergdahl’s release.

Obama is the real traitor here…our sitting and twice elected President is the one that is treasonous. Really?

For starters, Bergdahl was NOT a terrorist hostage…he was a POW.

There is a difference. Just like there’s a difference between Fox News reporters who maintain their faculties of reason and those who don’t…as the video below demonstrates.

I am bothered by all this. Deeply bothered. Why?

Because the level of vehemence that the far right is displaying smacks of the deepest levels of hypocrisy. And it’s all done under the guise of “loving one’s country.”

It’s a bit sickening, really.

They have even gone so far as to attack Bergdahl’s father for growing a beard in solidarity for the release of his son.

Since when do the far right, whose support for the U.S. military is always unwavering, become so up in arms about the release of a POW?

When the President that is securing the release is Barack Obama, that’s when.

Can they not at least take a deep breath and give Bergdahl himself a chance to explain the facts surrounding his capture?

Oh no, there’s the possibility of an Obama scandal in the air, and that scent drives the far right into an irrational feeding frenzy.

And there’s certainly no bigger nor hungrier mouth to feed than that of Fox News.

You know, I talk a lot here about things like the Big US and removing impact blinders. One of the ways to do that is to avoid rushes to judgment.

People do things for reasons that seem right to them at the time. In hindsight, sometimes those reasons are exposed as faulty. But it always pays to try to see things from their perspective at the time.

Bergdahl may indeed have become disillusioned about the war and the treatment of the Afghan people by U.S. soldiers. I would venture to say that there is a large percentage of the entire U.S. population that harbors similar sentiments.

Does that make them all un-American?

Does that make Bowe Bergdahl less than a U.S. soldier who was captured by the enemy and treated pretty badly…to the point of his health being in serious jeopardy?

Does that mean that in the future if there are more wars…something I would certainly hope against…and more POWs, that we better examine the facts of each case of captivity before taking action to secure release?

Does that mean that if there are allegations of desertion, we should just leave the POW exactly where he or she is?

I believe the far right needs to step back and examine exactly where all this foment over the curious case of Bowe Bergdahl leads.

Because it might just lead to a very un-American result.

If Bergdahl is really a deserter as Fox News has unequivocally declared, he should be tried and convicted of the same.

I doubt very seriously that’s actually the case at all.

In the meantime, those of you on the far right who want to try and convict him in the media, why don’t you all just shut the fuck up.

You’re behaviour is very un-American.

From Storms to Sterling

April 30, 2014 by costaricaguy Leave a Comment

from storms to Sterling

The small us is alive and well…

and wreaking havoc upon people and planet.

The proof?

Well, who can only but notice the change in the weather.

Yea, sure there have been storms forever…

but like this?

OK, I’ll admit there’s no hard evidence that global warming is causing an increase in the frequency of these massive F-4 and F-5 killer tornadoes…

but what if it is?

There’s certainly compelling evidence that it’s causing other anomalies, like floods, droughts and hurricanes.

And what does that have to do with the small us…you ask?

Well, I believe small us thinking, primarily by big oil and auto, among others, or those that benefit economically from the continued insatiable consumption of fossil fuels, leads the way in making sure that a country bearing a disproportionate share of the earth’s CO2 emissions…

does little to nothing about it…

rather than lead the world in clean fuel technology…

as it should!

And they have the likes of Fox News to help perpetuate this dangerous nonsense.

Don’t believe it? Check this out!

The point of this post is not about weather, but the general craziness that’s going on out there.

Consider the following recent headlines…

  • Owner of the L.A. Clippers, Donald Sterling, banned from the NBA for life after being caught on tape making racists remarks, basically admonishing his mixed-race mistress not to associate publicly with black people after she posed for a picture with Magic Johnson…
  • Former Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin telling an NRA audience that “water-boarding is how we baptize terrorists” AND getting roundly applauded for the absurdly anti-Christian remark…
  • An Egyptian court issues 683 death sentences in one fell swoop against members of the Muslim Brotherhood…
  • Man is arrested after throwing a banana at Barcelona’s Dani Alves during a soccer match…

Alves picked it up and took a bite before making his corner kick…

Score one big goal for Dani Alves!

Now, what do all these incidents seem to have in common?

small us thinking!

Because small us thinking always pits one group against another…

  • conservatives against liberals
  • Christians against Muslims
  • global warming advocates against global warming deniers
  • whites against blacks
  • blacks against whites
  • men against women
  • people against nature
  • capitalists against socialists
  • collectivists against individualists
  • nation against nation
  • tribe against tribe
  • people against people

It’s really kind of sad.

In the words of one of the poster-victims of the small us…

the late Rodney King…

Can’t we all just get along?

Sorry, Rodney, but it just doesn’t seem so.

I know I sound like the proverbial broken record, but, really, the answer is, in my opinion, the realization that we indeed are all…

in this planetary boat together.

From storms to Sterling, these small us views do threaten us all.

Isn’t it high time to get rid of them…for good?

To adopt a mindset that there really are no enemies…

except the mentality of the small us.

We’re all made of the same flesh and blood.

We all have the same basic needs…

and desires.

To be happy, live with dignity, free from oppression and exploitation…and small us generated hatred.

In the words of the one who probably wouldn’t agree with Palin’s remarks…

love your enemies…

Because by doing that, they might indeed stop hating you…

and killing you.

Terrorism just might cease to exist.

Now, I’m not quite so naive as to really believe that we don’t have enemies…

but I do believe that thinking of them only in that way just makes things worse.

Because the truth is that they’re not solely our enemies…

they’re people too…

just like us in more ways than you might be imagining.

The truth is that small us thinking will never solve the problems in our world…because it’s most often the source of them!
