On Fessing Up – Finally

October 3, 2017 by costaricaguy 1 Comment

On Fessing Up - Finally

My last post addressed the issue of the need to be right as the one that might be at the heart of the growing division in our country…

Today’s post is about fessing up – finally, or the admirable trait of knowing when to admit wrongness.

Sometimes we are forced to do so. Like when the facts begin to reveal themselves…

Let’s take a quick inventory and based on that, make an assessment regarding timeliness…

Just this year we’ve seen the following evidence transpire…right before our very eyes…

Racism rearing its ugly head, openly and defiantly, in ways we haven’t seen in some time…with white men holding tiki torches marching to defend the statue of a man who led a rebellion against America, resulting in its bloodiest war, in order to defend the right to enslave humans…

and in the aftermath of the ensuing chaos, a President who saw “good people” on both sides of that issue…

Back to back…to back…category 5 hurricanes and catastrophic once in a thousand-year level flooding with widespread damage and resulting human misery…

A President who insults just about everyone, almost daily, with his twitter feed, in ways that would make Don Rickles blush…and in ways that threaten to ignite global nuclear conflict…

Another worst mass shooting in history by a fellow citizen with an arsenal of weapons that allowed him to mow down almost 60 people in less then 16 minutes…

And despite all that you have this entrenched ultra right-wing who just can’t bring themselves to admit a few things, such as…

That racism really is a pernicious problem in American culture…

That global warming is a real and increasing threat to our lives…

That our sitting President is more than a bit unhinged…

That banning assault weapons makes perfectly good sense, will save (and would’ve saved) many lives, and doing so does not negate the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution in any way.

The last post made what I believe to be the salient point that it’s the stories we tend to tell (and attach ourselves to) that give rise to this reluctance against fessing up…

But sometimes the facts just speak for themselves too loudly to be ignored.

It’s sort of like the scientific method. Now, I’m not a scientist, but I do know it works something like this…

One scientist proposes a theory. At this point it’s no more than an educated guess or hypothesis…in other worlds…a “story”…

That theory is put to the test. It is subject to ridicule and rejection by the rest of the scientific community.

If the theory is able to weather that storm it gets to become accepted truth…a scientific fact.

If not? Well then it’s swept into the dustheap of rejected scientific history.

I don’t mean to pick on the right-wing here…well, maybe I do…perhaps I should.

You see, it seems there are some stories that they’re clinging to that have now been shown to be just flat out wrong.

Many of their stories are failing the fact test.

However, it appears that rather than to be willing to let them go, as any good and honest scientist would in the face of overwhelming factual evidence, they just cling to them all the harder…

They claim that any evidence (or “news”) to the contrary is not factual…it’s fake news they clamor!

Now just imagine if scientists operated that way. Imagine the chaos it would cause in the world!

The very idea of scientific truth would cease to exist.

Every theory (or story) would hold claim to truth and its proponents would take the position that any factual evidence to the contrary is contrived.

I dare say that this breakdown in the scientific method would produce a world that you and I would not want to live in!

Well, this breakdown in political thought is pretty much creating that same level of chaos in our society and our world.

Where will this ultimately lead us?

Not sure about that one…I’m still holding out hope that these folks will come around…

I’ve still got faith that as the factual evidence grows to overwhelming proportions…as it surely is…

that fessing up – finally will appear to be their only option.

Bernie Sanders is Number One on National Security

Bernie Sanders is Number One on National Security

My last post explained my passionate support of Bernie Sanders to become the 45th President of the U.S.

Bernie’s not just right on the issues, he’s knows what “the issues” really are…

He knows that out of control income and wealth inequality are ripping society to shreds and eviscerating the middle class…the great engine of growth and prosperity for all Americans.

He knows that a corrupt, money-driven political system, is at the core of rising inequality, as the system becomes increasingly rigged for the richest Americans.

He knows that global warming is on the verge of becoming an inescapable threat to our planet and all life that inhabits it.

He also knows that all of the above are inextricably intertwined with the threat to our national security.

National security gets a lot of press these days and for good reason. Terrorism appears to be on the rise despite the trillions and trillions of dollars we’ve spent to combat it since 9-11.

The typical response to the problem of national security is the neoliberal one.

“Neoliberal”…a term you might have read me railing against and thought to yourself, wait a minute, I thought the Revolutionary Misfit WAS a liberal…

Well, for starters, I don’t like to be labeled “liberal.”

In my opinion, there’s not much difference between a neoliberal and an establishment liberal…or an establishment conservative for that matter.

I’m a progressive.

I am a Sanders-Warren-style progressive who’d like to see some real and desperately needed change come to the country…and to the world.

What is neoliberalism?

Well, if you Google it, you get this:

Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, its advocates [namely Ronald Reagan of the U.S. and Margaret Thatcher of the U.K.] supported extensive economic liberalization policies such as privatization, fiscal austerity, deregulation, free trade, and reductions in government spending in order to enhance the role of the private sector in the economy.

What has really gotten us into the tremendous mess that the Middle East has become?

I would opine that neoliberalism and its first-cousin, neoconservatism, are at the heart of the problem.

Why have we insisted on meddling in Middle Eastern affairs…

from the overthrow of the democratically elected leader of Iran, Mosaddegh, in 1953, and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9-11, to Obama’s recent drone attacks and Syrian strategy (or lack thereof, depending on political perspective)?

Aren’t there “economic” and private sector implications…in addition to the resulting military-industrial complex boom?

Of course there are!

We’re in it for the oil, pure and simple. Because oil has long been the fuel of choice for the private sector economic engine.

And, remember, according to neoliberalism, there’s nothing more important than the private sector economy.

So, how does all this make Sanders, the guy who everyone in the establishment wants you to believe is weak on national security, become, in my opinion, numero uno on national security?

Well, according to practically all credible scientists in the world today, burning all that black gold has some grave consequences for people and planet…

it’s overheating us.

Oh sure, there are guys like Jim Inhofe and Donald Trump, neoliberal neocons in their own right, who say it’s all a hoax…

Well, quite simply, they’re just nuts.

If we choose to believe scientific fact about the threat of global warming, then it’s easier to embrace the idea of less dependence on oil as the fuel of choice. And less dependence on oil means less need for meddling in the Middle East. And the less meddling we engage in over there, the less reasons we give those people to hate us…pure and simple.

Not to mention the fact that less dependence on oil and more dependence on clean and renewable energy sources that don’t overheat our planet may still provide us with the outside chance of SAVING OUR PLANET…

I got news for the economically myopic neoliberal…without an inhabitable planet, guess what…there is NO ECONOMY!

Furthermore, scientists have said that one of the inevitable consequences of global warming will be mass displacement of populations, as sea levels rise and food sources become more scarce.

That gives rise to nationalistic tensions of the same sorts that Donald Trump is fanning right now in the U.S…calling for a massive wall on the southern border, mass deportation of “illegals”, and a ban on Muslims even being allowed to enter the country.

Those tensions can turn violent.

Recently I saw where an Al-Qaeda affiliated group is actually using Trump’s incendiary comments in a recruiting video.

Population displacement due to global warming plays right into the hands of demagogues like Trump, who attempt to gain power by leveraging fear…and fear can easily turn into violence.

Now, how does all this tie in with inequality and a corrupt political system?

Well, outside of financial, medical and big pharma, there are few greater sources of lobbyists and Super PAC donors exerting an undue influence in the halls of Congress than those of the energy and defense industries.

Don’t you think laws get passed, or fail to pass, for purposes of protecting those two very special interests?

Well, if you don’t, I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Bernie wants to upset all that. He wants the government of the country to pass laws that benefit real and hardworking people trying to get a leg up…and that help clean up our planet…rather than for “special interests” that have a vested interest in keeping us mired in the muck of the Middle East.

I just don’t believe the tired old neoliberal-neoconservative ideas of spending unlimited amounts of money on bombs, bullets and boots on the ground is in the best interest of national security…

Hey, where has it gotten us so far?

I believe getting rid of our dependence on oil as the economic fuel of choice, combatting global warming and its disastrous effects, and keeping our noses on problems at home, as opposed to constantly meddling in the affairs of others abroad, are in our best national security interests.

However, that will not happen unless we take back control of our government from those that operate exclusively from the neoliberal-neoconservative point of view.

For these reasons, I believe progressively-minded Bernie Sanders is number one on national security.

The Church of Universal Connection

April 19, 2014 by costaricaguy 2 Comments

church of universal connection

If you read much of my stuff, you might get the impression that I’m a bit down on organized religion…

and “the church.”

You’d be right about that impression.

Why is that you ask?

Doesn’t the church do a lot of good?

Yes it does. Many lives are rescued from the brink by the loving and nurturing environment of the church.

As long as, once indoctrinated, they faithfully tow the dogmatic line.

But that belies a more insidious problem.

For example, I posted something to the Facebook wall the other day about evolution. A close family member, who is an evangelical church-going christian, vehemently protested…

saying that he was in fact, disturbed.

Folks, evolution is science. Science is not something we believe in…science gives us facts about our world that were previously unknown. To deny those facts based on religion…or based on the idea that the facts contradict what your religious text of choice might say, is both absurd and…

perilous.

The idea that the sun revolved around the earth was once a religiously inspired concept that, thankfully, was disproved by science.

Take the more current example of climate change.

It seems the most staunch deniers continue to be evangelicals…

or big business republicans with a financial stake in perpetuating denial.

Even while the scientific fact of global warming is already wreaking havoc before our very eyes.

What do they need Noah to reappear before they can “believe in it?”

So, in the sense that the church helps hurting people…

I’m all for it.

In the sense that it creates mindless dogmatic robots…

whose chief concern is what happens in the afterlife…

as opposed to improving the condition of people and planet in this reality that all of humanity confronts…

I’m dead-set against it.

I wish I’d studied science, but I went for business (and law) instead.

Here’s my advice to young people…DON’T (please don’t) study business…

study science.

Why?

Because it helps us understand the world as it is…it helps us to find the truth.

And armed with that scientific knowledge, we can truly begin to change things for the better.

Business, on the other hand, teaches us to make or manage money (and law to keep possession of it)…and money is at the root of most of our current problems.

Money and religion, that is…

Now, having said that, do I believe science explains everything?

NO!

I believe it does, or potentially can, explain things such as the origin of the universe from a physical perspective.

I saw an interesting video on YouTube in which Neil DeGrasse Tyson described the folly in the idea that anything unexplained by science is proof of religion, or the existence of god.

NDT says folks that want to play that game are backing themselves into a smaller and smaller corner since the realm of the scientifically unexplained is shrinking rapidly.

Nevertheless science cannot explain, at least I haven’t heard a satisfactory explanation as of yet…

as to why GOOD exists.

In other words, why is it within our unique human capacity to sacrifice ourselves for the good of others?

There seems to be some force beyond ourselves that “sometimes” compels us to do that…

and it is a mysterious force indeed.

One that, I will even go so far as to say, is, or emanates from,…

god.

So, if I were to start a church (don’t worry I have no plans to do so)…

it would be along the following simple lines:

The congregation would meet, maybe once a week, and figure out how to do some good.

How to have some impact.

How to make life better for someone else, probably with a focus on those less fortunate than we.

And then we would go about doing those things.

A church of impact…

The church of universal connection…

One that recognizes our sameness and strives to actually improve the overall human condition.

With no dogmatic beliefs or rules whatsoever.

Now there’s a church I could readily join the ranks of.
